SKÅR // SHARDS

"A found object that by choice has emerged as sculpture, can be the basis of the starting point for a sculptural artwork. "

- Grethe Ørskov, 2013

With ceramic shards Katrine challenges our perspective of value and what we perceive as broken. What starts with an intact cubic form changes into material fragments and becomes the beginning of new ceramic sculptures.

The collection elevates the shard by highlighting the surfaces and shapes arising when shards are created and arranged in new compositions. The sculptures invite us to take a closer look and appreciate what we normally just get rid of.

In this project I have been driven by the possibilities in what other ceramists would consider as ruin. Shards, dust, cracks has been the starting point instead of the end of an object.

With a maker’s point of view, I have worked in a prospective manner, looking for the potentials in the materials and tried to move beyond the normative understanding of shards as some fragments a broken object.

It has been my goal to elevate the shard to something valuable and beautiful. The pit firing has served almost as a symbolic rebirth to the ceramics. Thereby I inten to replace the sad emotions connected broken objects to a celebration of the beauty that lies within flaws and irregularities.
