Pit Firing
There is something solemnly about pit fired ceramics. The results can be so detailed and diverse and the creating process is like a ritual.
It makes me wonder, if there is meaning of these patterns?
These Pit fired tiles are made from white clay. They are made with small imperfections, but all in the same size of squares. The pitfire process is uncontrolled, and it is the flames, smoke and different materials such as seaweed, wood, cobber wire, aluminum nut shells and dried fruit peel that decide the final look and color.
The surface of the tiles reminds me of the greatness of the universe and the world. To see what the fire and smoke can do without the need of human interfering and taking complete control. The power of nature just is all around us, available all the time if we reach out for it. That give me calm and rest. It gives me the impression that I don’t need to do a lot to be all right. I can just be present – as nature is. There is almost something religiose about the creation because the results can be so detailed and diverse, which sometimes make me wonder, if there is meaning of these patterns?
